In that “holy crap I wish I had an ounce of the creativity that Madame Ursula has in her tippy-toe” way, yeah. I always felt the same way about Jim Henson, too. My mind is, alas, far too bland for such wonders to come flyin’ outta it.
But as for the work itself? Any resemblance to Labyrinth is vastly and rapidly overshadowed by the originality and the distinctly unique voice of Digger’s creator.
Aw, bugger in a box! This is right around where I left off when I lost track of the updates, so I haven’t read anything much since, and now I have to run to class! Not fair!
Actually, they remind me of Egyptian gods. Horus to precise. Jim Henson did take the idea for the skeiches (i can’t spell their name….i think there’s an i in there somewhere) from Egyptian mythology and hieroglyphics as a source for their design. Simply put, they all look like god birds, lol.
I love that they say “trespassing in deep places” instead of just trespassing. It’s an effective way to indicate Digger and Murai are out of their debt literally and figuratively.
I keep thinking Murai’s name is Murtai and I can not remember what book that name is from. Anyone know?
Very cool, jaynee! Time Bandits is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I never made that connection. But you’re right, there’s a definite resemblance there!
At least I don’t feel old with this crowd, there’s a lot of youngsters today who aren’t aware of some of the classics like those 2 movies, but I was thinking of Dark Crystal when I saw these guys
@NigaiAmai Yume: and the rest of you…why did you have to bring up the Dark Crystal? thatโs only slightly bellow Animals of Farthing Wood, Watership Down and the air-vent scene in Secret of NIMH in the ranking of stuff from my childhood that still wakes my up in the dark of the night.
Hmm… Trespassing in deep places… Diane Duane’s /Deep Wizardry/. Ed the hyena talks of gods and demons being big, dangerous, but dangerous because of their nature, not evil. Ed the shark is a living example of gods being big, dangerous, but dangerous because of their nature, not evil. A dark, dead god with cold followers. A dark god of death with cold followers. COINCIDENCE!?*
This reminds me of Labrynth.
Just Kidding!!

Man, the stuff we drag out of our heads…
I was thinking more in the way of “Holy crap those look like the Ringwraiths, y’know, if they were birds.”
Aw, bugger in a box! This is right around where I left off when I lost track of the updates, so I haven’t read anything much since, and now I have to run to class! Not fair!
Nah, this is pure Dark Crystal.

Except that Horus is a sun god and these are… eclipse birds?
Nope, they’re Hunters from Palladium’s Nightbane line.
The word you’re looking for, djkibykat, is Skeksis.

Also, we heard the phrase “Deep Places” a while back … perhaps during Ed’s story?
๐
you know what these birds are? “Cold Servants”
I’m thinking of those scary beings in “Time Bandits” – there are 3 of them in the background on the left here: http://outnow.ch/Movies/1981/TimeBandits/Bilder/dvd-film.ws/24

They remind me of Shadowchild.
Y’know, if it was evil.
black speech bubbles…
Time Bandits and Dark Crystal

*Doubtlessly yes, a coincidence.
@Rowanmdm, for what it’s worth, Murtai is the Atan giantess in the Tamuli by David Eddings. And now you’re going to make me mix them up too.
