Elaine, thank you for pointing that out. My husband, whom loves wolves and has helped rehabilitate them was very upset at the thought of a hyena being called a canine. Well, upset might not be the right word….more..like..livid? No, just crazed is more like it.
I love wolves myself, but I think we can dismiss the canine comment to bad information on the Hag’s part – it’s not like they have genetic testing or anything.
According to the dictionary( http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/canine ), yes, they are canine. They just happen to also have a more specific adjective – just as they also share the more general adjective of canid with, say, foxes.
And Bears and tones other stuff if you’re going to split Order Carnivoria into the Caniform and Feliform sides, the borders of which get murkier and more starched with every genome sequenced.
Yes, Owl Caller is a hobbyist. A darned good hobbyist, but he never got a cent, bit, or zeni for his work. Nor did the hag, but it’s never a good idea to argue semantics with the person who is patching you up and already mad at you.
Weird, the comment I was replying too seems to have vanished. I can’t remember exactly what it said, but I think it was pointing out that caniformia includes everything from dogs and walruses to skunks and weasels. I decided to add “And Bears” to the comments on cool Caniforms. re-reading I suddenly find the comment gone and it looks like I’m saying bears are Feliforms. They’re really not. Cat-bears (Binturong) are, but true bears are not. I’d also like to nit-pick here and say that only members of canidi (wolves, dogs, foxes) are canine, other Caniforms are, well, Caniform. Thus hyenas would be Feliform, but not feline.
Also might I add the with the exception of my pet cat and Spotted Hyenas, cat-bears are the coolest Feliform ever: they smell of popcorn! how is that not awesome? As Ursula says, nature is cool.
I hate to point out that hyenas are feliforms, not canids, but I’m going to anyway. 🙂

“I stand corrected.”
No, you lie down sick! XD

And I believe it was a tun of mead…not just “some”.
Is the “I stand corrected” supposed to be coming from the hag?
Just cause I can be nitpicky, wolves aren’t canine, either. They’re lupine. xD

Long as you can ID them…
Am I reading this right? Hyenas are /cats/? ….hmmm. Never would have guessed.
