It might be either a cyclic calendar, or dated based on significant events. While it’s unlikely “the year of Chief Engineer Braces with extreme thoroughness” 428, It might be dynastic dating or something similar.
I sometimes wonder why historians use BC rather than some positive epoch appropriate to the subject matter, such as the Roman. (Perhaps that bothered Tolkien too, whence the Nth Age reckoning.)
Well, there is always the “BP” beloved of archaeologist in the 1960’s onwards, but stating “before present” (where the present is permanently fixes as 1950) is useful, but we tend only to use it foe radiocarbon or dendro dates in the UK: British archaeologists seem to have gradual given up on saying “BP” due to the fact that when we do no one except other archaeologists and those in other related fields seems to have any clue what we are talking about.
