Oh, yes, this is one of the best parts.

  2. D.W. Drang says:

I hate it when the pumpkins growl. Growly gourds are never a good sign…

  3. Furrama says:

So, Digger’s 25 years old eh? I wonder how long a talking wombat’s life cycle is.

  4. Lukjad007 says:

I remember someone mentioning this once, maybe even the author. This scene reminds me of Linus in Peanuts.

  5. BunnyRock says:

Given she tells Librarian Voh that her warren is about six hundred years old (if i remember correctly) the most interesting thing is not that Digger is 25, but that her calender system seems to be significantly younger than her home warren.

  6. Jay says:

BunnyRock: I’m assuming it’s not unlike the fact that the Earth is 4.3 billion years old, and yet our calendar system is only at the year 2009.

  7. Eugene says:

It’s possible they reset the calendar after whatever happened at Tunnel 17.

  8. Dan D says:

It might be either a cyclic calendar, or dated based on significant events. While it’s unlikely “the year of Chief Engineer Braces with extreme thoroughness” 428, It might be dynastic dating or something similar.

  9. Tamfang says:

I sometimes wonder why historians use BC rather than some positive epoch appropriate to the subject matter, such as the Roman. (Perhaps that bothered Tolkien too, whence the Nth Age reckoning.)

  10. BunnyRock says:

Well, there is always the “BP” beloved of archaeologist in the 1960’s onwards, but stating “before present” (where the present is permanently fixes as 1950) is useful, but we tend only to use it foe radiocarbon or dendro dates in the UK: British archaeologists seem to have gradual given up on saying “BP” due to the fact that when we do no one except other archaeologists and those in other related fields seems to have any clue what we are talking about.

  11. Piratefish says:

I really hope this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_pumpkins_and_watermelons is the source of the disturbance!

  12. Elkian says:

    Pumpkin weevil?

  13. Tamfang says:

Wow, thank you Piratefish. I have long wondered whether Drusilla ever tried to vampirize a puppy (and whether it would work), but I see I was thinking too narrowly.
