But then, would her mom feel better if she did get a letter?
“Dear Mom, I fell through a magical tunnel and I’m now trying to kill a dead god with the help of a grumpy Hyena and a disturbed Veiled kid. Also I sort of adopted a demon, but he_she’s just left to civilize other demons. Did I mention all the prophecising slugs, talking god statues and vampire squash I ran into? Also I’m really not sure I’ll ever find a way home. Other than that, I’m fine. Love, Digger”
I’m pretty sure, by now, that Digger’s family must’ve proclaimed her dead. She’s been gone for months. I’m willing to bet that her iPod belongs to her little brother, who deleted all her music and replaced it with Mozart’s KV 617, and a bunch of gothic rap. XD
I’m thinking that Helix is female?? sending (her) boys off? and besides, who but a mom can lay a guilt trip like that? placental mammal mom or marsupial mom, they’re all like that!
interesting that helix thinks the world isn’t in any real danger – is this faith in his work, certainty that digger will succeed, or just a belief that even if something as evil as sweetgrass voice should be released, the basically decent bulk of the rest of the world will keep it in check?
…..or is there maybe something else that he knows about?
@mouse: I think it’s just a matter of perspective — for example, something that totally destroys several hundred square miles is an utter disaster to anyone living there or nearby, but the whole world is a *lot* bigger and that would only be a fly speck in the overall scheme of things.
I’m now envisioning Mama Wombat at home, driving everyone in the clan bonkers about Digger being missing…
Wouldn’t it amazingly silly if the entire Quartzclaw clan showed up in the dead-god tunnels, looking for Digger?
Wombats are, after all, as stubborn as they are practical, are they not? 😛
I’m wondering if ‘Digger’ is a nickname and ‘Quartzclaw’ is her given name.
I believe this was discussed last time Helix used it. But I forget; was there any definitive answer?
(And for the record, I’m the one that pointed out that Digger’s full name – Digger of Unnecessarily Convoluted Tunnels – could be abbreviated DUCT. Unfortunately the “of Clan Quartzclaw” part doesn’t fit as neatly into the acronym … )
I don’t believe it! I found Digger yesterday and now i’m up to date! i love that practical Wombat and cried for Shadowchild, now I have to get used to only getting a new comic twice a week, instead of 700 odd in 24 hrs!
P.P.P.S. I kinda got adopted as a daughter by this dirty old blind woman. She is the leader of a tribe of cannibals and probably pees standing up. This happened largely by accident, I am in no way trying to replace you with another parent figure, and before you ask no I have NOT joined a cult like poor second cousin Quick-hewer did after that pit-prop collapsed and waked him round the head and made him think the Great Shoveler spoke to him. Although that said, they did give me the new name “little mother of earthquakes” after one of their gods and get me drunk and make me eat someones liver of pain of death but most of them are okay, one even pulled me up after I fell down that crevasse I just realized I should probably have mentioned earlier. Weather remains fine. Eating properly and warping up warm with that jacket you made me as instructed,
Laqez – LOL That’s a well-developed guilt receptor you’ve got firing, there.
BunnyRock – “warping up warm” is even funnier than the usual version of the phrase.
lochie – you *do* know that you’ll have problems with your prostate later in life if you read too many comics without proper toilet breaks, yeah?
Helix’s line about “I don’t think the world’s in any real danger” makes me thing even more that this entire epic is just the set-up for the real world-changing events that ensue when the Shadow becomes a missionary to the Feral Demons. The real important part was the end of the last chapter; what remains is, on the grand scale of things, simply tying up a few loose ends.
I now declare that a scene with Digger returning home to her mother be written!
Seconded!
Oh, ancestor guilt. It’s even weightier than mother’s guilt.
“Dear Mom,
I can explain. You see, first there was this hole…”
@JewelWolf – Lol!
Poor mama-wombat.
And you just KNOW that when she gets home, her mother will never understand her predicament.
Ursula, this is your mother. Again.
You never call. You never write. The least you could do is update Digger three times a week instead of two.
Oh, and start up Gearworld again.
*sigh* Sometimes great-great-great-whatever-grandparents can be sooooo….helpful.
But then, would her mom feel better if she did get a letter?

and nils wins the internet.
Nils, that’s perfect!
Haha, right. “P.S.: I’ve got gods coming up out of my ears. Do you think you can send me some god spray?”
P.P.S. Great, great, great [buncha more greats] grandpa Helix says hi.
😉
But has Digger written a letter, to have it ready on the off chance of a fleeting opportunity for means to send it?

This comic is brilliant; i’ve just hit the end of the archives. Most engrossing read I’ve had for awhile now. Thank you ursula.
Sorry, quiltcat, but it has long since been established that Helix is male (well, was, anyway).
Besides, dads can guilt-trip, too. Especially about “worrying your mother”.
😉

Practical advice from a practical wombat 😀

Digger-Of-(Many?)-Convoluted-Tunnels is her name. Quartzclaw is the clan name.
Digger-of-OVERLY-Convoluted-Tunnels, i believe.
CALL YOUR MOTHERS!
(I did after reading this.)
Digger-of-UNNECESSARILY-Convoluted-Tunnels. I remember this because someone pointed out the fact that her initials spelled DUCT.
Faranior is right. I remember when she told Ed.
When Digger gets home, she will write her mother an engineering treatise.
When digger gets back, some will say. Huh. Gotta redo your headstone.
Wombats.
😀 KNO3, now you’re thinking like a wombat!
(And for the record, I’m the one that pointed out that Digger’s full name – Digger of Unnecessarily Convoluted Tunnels – could be abbreviated DUCT. Unfortunately the “of Clan Quartzclaw” part doesn’t fit as neatly into the acronym … )

FINALLY! I’m caught up!

DUCT of Clan Quartzclaw has a certain ring to it.
That’s only the full, ceremonial name, though.
@nils

Love,
Duct-y.
Ooh, is grandpa Helix annoyed that his speech was interrupted or what?
Anyone else wonder why she didn’t ask him how to get home?

[Frustration] My comment should read “makes me think even more”. Apologies.
